Confederate Rose

This is the Mother's favorite flower from my aunt's garden. She has been waiting all year for this one bush to flower out, and she wasn't disappointed (thank goodness, cause when momma ain't happy...ain't NOBODY happy...).   We were afraid Ivan might destroy the buds that were just starting to open, but they survived beautifully....

Beautiful rose!  Looks like it's made of tissue paper, so transparent and delicate looking.

I have two confederate rose bushes and I do enjoy them.  One is about 12 feet tall and full of blooms; the other is smaller but growing well.  I heard that the name of the Confederate Rose derived from the Civil War.  The soldiers, supposedly, send messages using the Confederate Rose.  Does anyone know any more to this story?  It would be interesting to know.
I'm no great photographer, but I'm going to photograph the roses when they open white in the morning (beautiful if there is a little fog) then again about noon when they turn pale pink, about 4 o'clock when they turun dark pink and then the red at dusk.  I think it would be neat to have a composite of the pictures with perhaps a little historical data written underneath.       Millie
